Explanation / Answer
Two variables X and Y are positively related:
If X increases, Y also increases.
and
If X decreases, Y also decreases.
Two variables X and Y are negatively related:
If X increases, Y decreases.
and
If X decreases, Y increases.
EXAMPLE IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE:
Positive relationship:
Let X = number of crimes a culprit commits
and
Y = number of years of imprisonment.
If a culprit commits large crimes, his imprisonment years will be large. If he does less crimes, his imprisonment years will be small.
Negative relationship:
Let X = Culprit's Lawyer's arguments.
Y = Punishment
If Culprit's Lawyer's arguments more, punishment will be less.
If Culprit's Lawyer's arguments less, punishment will be more.
