Question

Investigators wanted to examine risk factors for Parkinson’s Disease (PD). They used a population-based case-control study design to examine whether previous head trauma increased the risk of PD. As you may recall, there was quite a bit of publicity around the hypothesized relationship between head trauma and PD after Muhammad Ali, possibly one of the most famous boxers of all time, developed PD. In this study, cases were recruited from a large multi-site physician practice and had to have a diagnosis of PD. For each case, a control of the same age and sex was selected from the same physician practice. Information on medical history, family history, environmental exposures, and previous injuries was obtained through a structured interviewer-administered questionnaire. It is possible that given the highly publicized case of Muhammad Ali, persons with a PD diagnosis may be more aware of their previous head injuries than controls. If true, which type of bias does this exemplify?

Explanation / Answer

Pakinson's Disease happen when there is a crisis in the assured nerve in the brain. It is possible true that given the highly publicized case of Muhammad Ali,person with a Pakinson's disease dignosis may be more aware of their previous head injuries than control.

But in a case control study a selection bias occur when the subjects are not truly representative of the population that produced the case

Here the hypothetical case control study was conducted to determine whether head trauma and parkinson's disease is associated. The investigators identify control subject from large multi-site physician practice. For each case,a control of the same age and sex was selected from the same physician practice. The problem is that the controls was selected from same situation
