Question
What is the critical value? What is the standardized test statistic? As part of your work for an environmental awareness group, you want to test the claim that the mean waste generated by adults in the country is more than 3 pounds per person per day. In a random sample of 8 adults in the country, you find thatthe mean waste generated per person per day is 34 pounds and the standard deviation is 1A pounds. 0.01 can you support the claim? Assume the population is normally distributed. la) Write the claim mathematicaly and identify Ho and Ha.Explanation / Answer
Mean = 3.4 and SD = 1.4 , also n = 8
so we shall use the t stat to check the claim
H0 : mean waste <=3 pounds
H1 : mean waste > 3 pounds
Now the t stat is
t = (x-u)/(sd/sqrt(n))
t = (3-3.4)/(1.4/sqrt(8)) = -0.8081
and the degree of freedom is n-1 = 8-1 = 7 , so we now check the value of the t critical in the t table for df = 7 and alpha = 0.01
as this is a 1 tail test , the critical value is 2.99
as our t stat is less than t critical , hence we fail to reject the null hypothesis and conclude that mean waste <=3 pounds
