Question

You are a researcher who has been asked to look at the relationships of confidence and resting heart rate or cortisol level. One sample of 35 participants was assessed on these variables. One variable is a self-report of self-confidence. Another variable is their resting heart rate, a measure of physical relaxation (decreased heart rate means more relaxation). The third is cortisol level, a measure of stress (decreased cortisol means decreased stress).

You are asked to use what you learn from the above analysis to predict scores of resting HR and cortisol level based on scores of self-confidence. Using regression, you will predict scores for the following self-confidence scores: Participant 36; self-confidence score = 7 Participant 37; self-confidence score = 4 Participant 38; self-confidence score = 10 Here the components of the regression equations for each variable: Resting heart rate: a = 57.87; b = 0.963 Cortisol level: a = -6.518; b = -0.480

Which of those regression equations do you trust more to give an accurate prediction? Why?

These are the s.e.e. values for each regression: Resting heart rate: 12.2 Cortisol level: 1.13

Explanation / Answer

The values provided in the table gives a different result of estimates of regression parameters than provided in quetion

for resting heart rate it is same

Resting heart rate: a = 57.87; b = 0.963

but for Cortisol level: the estimates of parameters will be

a =

; b =

-1.14675

Using these values required estimates are givenin following table

Since goodness of fit R2 for RestingHR is

0.485207

and for Cartisol Level R2 is

There fore we Resting heart rate will be predicted better.
