Question

In a pretest, respondents were asked to express their preferences for an outdoor lifestyle (V1) using a 7 point scale (1 = not at all preferred, 7 = greatly preferred) They were also asked to indicate the importance of the following variables on a 7point scale (1= not at all important, 7 = very important) V1= outdoor life V2= enjoy nature V3= relate to wether V4= live in harmony w/ enviroment v5= exercsies regularly V6= meet other people The gender of the respondent V7 was coded as 1=female and 2=male. The location of residence v8 was coded 1=midtown/downtown 2=suburbs 3=countryside Data obtained in table In each case, forumalte the null and alternative hypothesis and conduct appropiate test and show work (from SPSS)

Explanation / Answer

d) does the importance attahced to V2 through V6 differ for man and female

Null Hypothesis H0: The importance attached to V2 is same for man and female.

Alternative Hypothesis H1: The importance attached to V2 is different for man and female.

On running anova for V2 and V7, I got the p-value = 4.075e-07. As p-value is less than the significance level (0.05), we reject the null hypothesis and conclude that V2 differ for men and women

Null Hypothesis H0: The importance attahced to V3 is same for man and female.

Alternative Hypothesis H1: The importance attached to V3 is different for man and female.

On running anova for V3 and V7, I got the p-value = 0.742. As p-value is not less than the significance level (0.05), we fail to reject the null hypothesis and conclude that V3 does not differ for men and women

Null Hypothesis H0: The importance attached to V4 is same for man and female.

Alternative Hypothesis H1: The importance attached to V4 is different for man and female.

On running anova for V4 and V7, I got the p-value = 0.03139. As p-value is less than the significance level (0.05), we reject the null hypothesis and conclude that V4 does differ for men and women

Null Hypothesis H0: The importance attached to V5 is same for man and female.

Alternative Hypothesis H1: The importance attached to V5 is different for man and female.

On running anova for V5 and V7, I got the p-value = 0.6084. As p-value is not less than the significance level (0.05), we fail to reject the null hypothesis and conclude that V5 does not differ for men and women

Null Hypothesis H0: The importance attached to V6 is same for man and female.

Alternative Hypothesis H1: The importance attached to V6 is different for man and female.

On running anova for V6 and V7, I got the p-value = 0.003707. As p-value is less than the significance level (0.05), we reject the null hypothesis and conclude that V6 does differ for men and women

e) do the respondents attach more importance to enjoying nature than they do realting to weather

Null Hypothesis H0: The respondents attach same importance to enjoying nature and realting to weather

Alternative Hypothesis H1: The respondents attach more importance to enjoying nature than they do realting to weather.

Mean of importance of enjoying nature = 4.6

Mean of importance relating to weather = 3.6

Standard deviation of importance of enjoying nature = 1.868

Standard deviation of importance relating to weather = 1.734

Standard error = 0.4653

Degree of freedom = 58

t = (4.6-3.6)/0.4653 = 2.149

p-value for t = 2.149 at df = 58 is 0.018

As p-value is less than the significance level (0.05),  we reject the null hypothesis and conclude that the respondents attach more importance to enjoying nature than they do realting to weather.

f) do the respondents attach more importance relating to weather than when they do to meeting other people

Null Hypothesis H0: The respondents attach same importance relating to weather and when they do to meeting other people.

Alternative Hypothesis H1: The respondents attach more importance relating to weather than when they do to meeting other people

Mean of importance relating to weather = 3.6

Mean of importance of meeting people = 3.867

Standard deviation of importance relating to weather = 1.734

Standard deviation of importance of meeting people = 1.87

Standard error = 0.4656

Degree of freedom = 58

t = (3.6-3.867)/0.4656 = -0.5735

p-value for t = -0.5735 at df = 58 is 0.7157

As p-value is not less than the significance level (0.05),  we fail to reject the null hypothesis and conclude that the respondents does not attach more importance relating to weather than when they do to meeting other people.

g) do the respondents attach more importance to living in harmony with enviroment than they do with exercising regularly,

Null Hypothesis H0: The respondents attach same importance to living in harmony with enviroment and they do with exercising regularly.

Alternative Hypothesis H1: The respondents attach more importance importance to living in harmony with enviroment than they do with exercising regularly.

Mean of importance to living in harmony with enviroment = 4.53

Mean of importance of exercising regularly = 3.6

Standard deviation to living in harmony with enviroment  = 1.634

Standard deviation of importance of exercising regularly = 1.673

Standard error = 0.427

Degree of freedom = 58

t = (4.53-3.6)/0.427 = 2.178

p-value for t = 2.178 at df = 58 is 0.0167

As p-value is less than the significance level (0.05),  we reject the null hypothesis and conclude that the respondents does attach more importance to living in harmony with enviroment than they do with exercising regularly.

h) is there a difference in V1(outdoor life) by V8 (location of residence)

Null Hypothesis H0: The importance attached to V1 is same for all location of residence.

Alternative Hypothesis H1: The importance attached to V1 is different for different location of residence.

On running anova for V1 and V8, I got the p-value = 0.6555. As p-value is not less than the significance level (0.05), we fail to reject the null hypothesis and conclude that importance attached to V1 is same for all location of residence.

I) is there a difference in V2 ( enjoy natuer) by V8

Null Hypothesis H0: The importance attached to V2 is same for all location of residence.

Alternative Hypothesis H1: The importance attached to V2 is different for different location of residence.

On running anova for V2 and V8, I got the p-value = 3.998e-06. As p-value is less than the significance level (0.05), we reject the null hypothesis and conclude that importance attached to V2 is different for different location of residence.

J) is there a difference in V6 (meet people) by V8

Null Hypothesis H0: The importance attached to V6 is same for all location of residence.

Alternative Hypothesis H1: The importance attached to V6 is different for different location of residence.

On running anova for V6 and V8, I got the p-value = 0.00618. As p-value is less than the significance level (0.05), we reject the null hypothesis and conclude that importance attached to V6 is different for different location of residence.
