Question
a) Assume that the target hot spot size is equal to the grid spacing, i.e. matches grid size regardless of grid scale due to weather and ambient local mixing. Furthermore, the target valley area to be sampled is ~ 100 square kilometers. Suppose one has a fixed budget say $1000 and that the cost to analyze a sample is $10. With this constraint, (and assuming volunteer work - with no fixed overhead cost), what grid spacing is allowable to cover the same nominal area, and what beta can be achieved?Explanation / Answer
givenArea to be covered = 100 sq kilometers
Cost to analyse one sample =$10
Total budget = $1000
From above 2 points we can get number of samples as 1000/10 = 100
Total area / total number of samples = grid size
100sq kilometers /100 = 1 sq kilometer = grid size or grid area
Spacing is distance between the grid's
Assuming we use all square samples of areas only we get the grid spacing =1sq kilometer = 1 kilometer
So we can have one hot spot for 1 sq kilometer area
