Question

A researcher notices that many products sold in the United States depict famous people or characters. To determine whether this actually influences how much children like these products, the researcher gave children a block of wood. On the top of the block of wood was a sticker of a superhero, a parent, a teacher, or no person at all (just a plain colored sticker). Children were allowed to handle each block of wood for 2 minutes and then were asked to rate how much they liked each block of wood on a pictorial scale similar to the one shown (adapted from Bradley & Lang, 1994). These types of scales are typically used with children because faces are familiar to them. Higher ratings indicated greater liking. Given the following data, test whether liking for the block of wood varied by the type of sticker at a .05 level of significance (two-tailed).

What is the null hypothesis?

What is the alternative hypothesis?

The independant variable has how many levels?

Explanation / Answer

bi= effet of ith level on a children i=1,2,3,4

then , null hypothesis : b1=b2=b3=b4

Alternative hypothesis : At least one of the bi's is not equal to others.

The independent variable is 'sticker type on the wood' . It has 4 levels. viz a superhero, a parent, a teacher, or no person at all
