Basic research means studies that generate new knowledge via supporting or debunking existing theories. This form of research often has knowledge gaps to filled and is mostly driven by hypothesis. Applied research, on the other hand, utilize existing knowledge (theories) to invent novel technologies, or to improve current technologies. The output for basic research is often in academic publications, whereas for applied research, it is prototypes and/or processes. Basic research on this would look into projectile theory in order to come up with information regarding physical and natural forces governing fast moving objects which has implications in weapon applications.
