Question
Please Suppose in a counseling study eight subjects were randomly assigned to each of three groups. The subjects were pretested and posttested on client satisfaction, which served as the dependent variable. (a) What is the main reason for using the pretest here as a covariate? (b) In what other way might the covariate be useful? (c) What effect would the possibility of pretest sensitization have on your decision to use a pretest in this study? a. For the statistical procedure (You liked most) what scale of measurement is used for each variable?Explanation / Answer
Answer to part a)
we use the Pre-test as the covariate in those situations when the main aim is to test the effectiveness of the treatment applied on the sample and hence the sample sample is observed after some time period.
here we compare the performance of the same sample before the treatment and after the treatment. hence the main purpose is to undertsand the impact of the treatment
.
Answer to part b)
The benefits of covariate :
It excludes the influence of other factors
it lets you take only one sample and with its help we are able to conduct the study, thus it makes the work hasslefree and time saving
.
Answer to part c)
If in case pretest sensitization does take place, it would ruin the sole purpose of making use of pretest and finding the effect of treatment on the subjects. This is because the pretest sensitization lready has an effect on the subjects, thus the post test effect would not be merely the treatment effect , it would be a varied effect due to the pretest done before. Hence if pretest sensitization happens, considering a pretest doesnot serve the purpose of the study and it would be better to go for a different research design.
