Question

Suppose the data represent the inches of rainfall in April for a certain city over the course of 20 years. (a) Determine the quartiles (b) Compute the interquartile range, lQR. (c) Determine the lower and upper fences. Are there any outliers, according to this criterion? (a) What are the quartiles? Round to three decimal places as needed.) Round to three decimal places as needed.) Round to three decimal places as needed.) (b) IQR Round to three decimal places as needed.) (c) The lower fence is Round to three decimal places as needed.) The upper fence is Round to three decimal places as needed.) Are there any outliers in the given data set? 0.45 1.84 3.08 4.78 0.77 2.17 3.36 4.89 0.99 2.46 3.85 5.18 1.13 2.63 4.17 5.63 1.58 2.79 4.62 5.74

Explanation / Answer

By using MS EXCEL we can find out quartiles as ,

Put all the data in MS EXCEL worksheet

Then use the following command

=QUARTILE(array,quart )

( For array : select all the data )

we get Q1 = 1.775

Q2 = 3.080

Q3 = 4.700

B ) Interquartile range = Q3 - Q1 = 4.700 - 1.775 = 2.925

C ) Lower fences = Q1 - ( 1.5 *IQR )

= 1.775 - ( 1.5 * 2.925 )

= -2.6125

= -2.612

Upper fences = Q3 + 1.5*IQR

= 4.700 + 1.5 * 2.925

= 9.088

There is no outliers because all the values between lower and upper fences i.e between ( -2.612 , 9.088 )

Option C is correct

There is no outliers

Option B is correct
