Question

1. Measurements show that the PH of a particular lake is 4.0 what is the hydrogen ion condentration of the lake?What is the hydroxide concentration of the lake?

2. How many grams of acetic acid (C2H4O2) would you use to make 10L of a 0.1M aqueous solution of acetic acid?

3. A slice of pizza has 500 kcal. If we could burn the pizza and use all the heat to warm a 50-L container of cold water, what would be the approximate increase in the temperature of the water?

4. Chemically what is the primary difference between glycogen and cellulose? in what type of organisms would you find glycogen? in what type of organisms would you find cellulose?

Explanation / Answer

1).

pH +pOH = 14

pH of the lake is 4.0. So, pOH = 14 - 4 = 10.

pOH = -log[OH-]

10 = -log[OH-]

Take antilog on both sides,

Hydrogen ion concentration in the lake is equal to 10-10 M.

2). The molecular weight of acetic acid is 60 (12 + 12+ 4+ 16+ 16) grams. 0.1 M of acetic acid solution contains 6 grams of acetic acid.

So, to make 10 litres of 0.1M acetic acid solution 60 grams should be dissolved in 10 litres.

3). Heat required to increase the temperature of I g of substance (with specific heat 1) by 1 degree is called calorie.

Calorie = specific heat
