Question

A research study was conducted to examine the clinical efficacy of a new antidepressant. Depressed patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups: a placebo group, a group that received a low dose of the drug, and a group that received a moderate dose of the drug. After 4 weeks of treament, the patients completed the Beck Depression Inventory. The higher the score, the more depressed the patient. The data are presented below

A) By computer, we find SST(sum of square of total) is 2184.8, and the SSE ( sum of square within groups) is 790.8. Based on this calculate the F-Value.

B) at =0.05 can we conclude there is a significant difference between the groups?

reatment, the patients complete the Beck Depressio more depressed the patient. The data are presented Placebo Low Dose l Moderate Dose 22 26 19 39 23 31 find SST (Sum of Square of Total) is 2184.8 zoo o Rorod on this calculate the F-value

Explanation / Answer

here sum of square of treatment SSTR=SST-SSE =1394

hence MSTR =SSTR/(k-1) =1394/2=697

and MSE=SSE/(n-k)=790.8/12=65.9

hence test stat F= MSTR/MSE =10.58

b) at 0.05 level and 2,12 degree of freedom ciritcal value of F=3.885

as test stat is higher then critical value we reject null hypothesis and conclude that  there is a significant difference between the groups
