Question

Suppose that 80% of computers use an Intel processor. (a) Suppose 2 computers are randomly selected (assume independence). Find the probability that the first computer or second computer has an Intel processor, i.e. find P(I_1 union I_2). (b) Suppose 2 computers are randomly selected (assume independence). Find the probability that exactly 1 has an Intel processor. (c) Suppose 4 computers are randomly selected (assume independence). Find the probability that 1 or more contain an Intel processor.

Explanation / Answer

Probability of having an intel processor = 0.8

a) P(first or second computer has an intel processor) = 1 - P(both does not have intel processor)

= 1 - 0.2x0.2 = 0.96

b) P(exactly 1 out of 2 has an intel processor) = 0.8x0.2 + 0.2x0.8 = 0.32

c) P(1 or more out of 4 has an intel processor) = 1 - P(none has an intel processor)

= 1 - 0.24

= 0.9984
