The data below represent the distribution of household prices of a small population of households in Westlake Village (in mln. of dollars): 4 9 11 46 58

Explanation / Answer

1) (a) This is an example of cluster sampling. In cluster sampling every member is part of only one group and then we choose clusters and then choose respondents from these clusters. Here the cluster is excercice groups, which could be people swimming, yoga, aerobics, gym, jogging, walking etc. 3 have been chosen amongst the clusters, and from these clusters a sample has been chosen.

(b) When an entire target population is surveyed, then this type of sampling is called a census. In this case too, all the customers of the coffee shop are being surveyed.
