Question
In some country, 17% of the adult people are divorced or widows 35% are married and 48% are single (never been married). How do you simulate this using single digit random numbers? A statistics teacher wants to know how his students feel about an introductory statistics course. He decides to administer a survey to a random sample of students taking the course. He has several sampling plans to choose from. Name the sampling strategy (Method) in each. a. There are four ranks of students taking the class: freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Randomly -select 15 students from each class rank. b. Randomly select a class rank (freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors) and survey every student in that class rank. C. Each student has a nine-digit student number. Randomly choose 60 numbers. d. Using the class roster, select every fifth student from the list. Administrators at a hospital are concerned about the possibility of drug abuse by people who work there. They decide to check on the extent of the problem by having a random sample of the employees undergo a drug test. Each employee has a 5-digit ID number Randomly choose 50 numbers. They found that 6 of them have drug abuse. Explain each of the following: Parameter: Statistic: Sampling Method: Give one things that can be wrong with the sampling method.Explanation / Answer
1) To collect the random sample from sequence of single digit number , we can consider the sequence as 0123456789 . Can collect the data using different combinations from the sequence.
2 .a ) There are four ranks of students freshmen,Sophomores, juniors and seniors and randomly students are selected from each rank group. So as groups are formed and students are selected from each group thus we can perform Stratified random sampling method.
2 .b) Randomly we select one group among four rank groups and then from that we randomly select students from that selected group thus we can perform Cluster random sampling method.
2 .c) Each student has nine-digit number and randomly 60 numbers are selected . Then we can perform Simple random sampling method.
2 .d) As we are selecting every fifth student from the list . Then we can perform Sequential random sampling method.
3) Parameter is entire population representation .
Here Parameter : Total number of people who are working in the hospital.
Statistic is sample from population .
Here Statistic : Random number of people undergo durg test.
Each employee has unique ID and 50 employees are randomly choosen by using this ID.
Thus Sampling Method : Simple random sampling.
Drawback of Sampling method : We got 6 people out of 50 sample who do durg abuse .
As we selected 50 random samples from total number of employees in a hospital and got only 6 people from 50 ramdom sample then it is possibility that there are more people who do drug abuse but due to simple random sampling method they got missed from sample size itself .
