3. [16 points] In a sample of 45 division I college football teams, 31 had a mascot that was a real animal.

A. What proportion of teams in this sample have a mascot that is a real animal?

B. Given that P(A) is the probability that a team has an animal mascot, compute P(AC).

Explanation / Answer

sample of 45 division I college football teams, 31 had a mascot that was a real animal.

A)

no of  football teams in division I = 45

no of teams that had a mascot that was a real animal = 31

proportion of teams in this sample have a mascot that is a real animal

=no of teams that had a mascot that was a real animal/ no of  football teams in division I = 31/45 = 0.689

B)

P(A)- is the probability that a team has an animal mascot

probability that a team has an animal mascot = proportion of teams in this sample have a mascot that is a real animal

= 0.689

so P(A) = 0.689

we know that P(A) + P(Ac) = 1

P(Ac) = 1- P(A)

P(Ac) = 1- 0.689 = 0.311

P(Ac) = 0.311
