I am having trouble understanding why the choice is for each. Please explain

For each of the following scenarios, which of the following hypothesis tests is most appropriate: one sample proportion, one sample mean, two independent proportions, two independent means, or two paired (dependent) means? Explain why. A. Penn State's College of Education wants to know if applicants to their M.Ed. programs and their M.S. programs differ in terms of whether or not they have work experience. B. The manager of a retail store wants to know if the average age of customers in her store is greater than 35 years. C. Penn State's Department of Statistics wants to know if applicants to its major have SAT-Math scores that are higher than their SAT-Verbal scores. They take a simple random sample of 40 applicants and record each individual's SAT-Math and SAT-Verbal scores. D. Students at Penn State and Michigan State are arguing over which university's students are faster. They take a random sample of 25 students from each university and time how long it takes them to run 400 meters. E. We know that in the population of all Penn State World Campus students 18.6% have military experience. An instructor at Penn State Harrisburg wants to know if the proportion of students at Penn State Harrisburg is different from 18.6%. She takes a random sample of 100 Penn State Harrisburg students and records whether or not each student has military experience. F. A pharmaceutical company wants to compare the LDL cholesterol levels of patients who have taken two different drugs (Drug A and Drug B). They randomly assign 30 patients to receive Drug A and 30 patients to receive Drug B. After taking 90 days they measure each patient's LDL cholesterol level.

Explanation / Answer

A. IN this problem, we are comparing two different programs for different-2 persons. So, here we will use Hypotheiss testing for two different proportions. Here, focus is on whether or not they have work experience or not. Two different Programs and for different people is the key word here.

B. Here we are comparing average age of customers to a standard age 35 years so that means we will use Hypotheiss testing for one sample mean. We are not comparing here it with any other store or anything so only one sample mean is there.

C. Here we are comparing two different subjects i.e. SAT - math and SAT- verbal for same 40 students. Here students are not different for both test. So, here we will use Hypotheiss testing for two paired (dependent) means.

D. Here we are comparing two differenet uinversity students so it can't be paired and we are calculating the sample mean time for both samples. So, here we will use Hypotheiss testing for two independent means.

E. Here we are comparing proportion of students who have military experience to the standard proportion of 18.6%. So, only one sample proportion is required to be calculated.so, here we will use Hypotheiss testing for one sample proportion.

F. Herewe are comparing two different samples of cholestrol level for 30 different -2 patients for Drug A and Dug B. so Here, we will use Hypotheiss testing for two independent means.
