Question
A research study was conducted to examine the clinical efficacy of a new antidepressant Depressed patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups: a placebo group, a group that received a low dose of the drug, and a group that received a moderate dose of drug. After four weeks of treatment, the patients completed the Beck Depression Inventory. The higher the score, the more depressed the patient. The data are presented below. a). By computer, we find SST (sum of square of Total) is 2184.8, and the SSE (Sum of Square within groups) is 790.8. Based on this, calculate the F-value. b). At alpha = 0.05, can we conclude there is a significant difference between the groups?Explanation / Answer
a) as sum of square b/w treatement =SSTR =SST-SSE =2184.8-790.8=1394
for MSE=SSE/(n-k) =790.8/12=65.9
and MSTR =SSTR/(k-1)=1394/2=697
hence F=697/65.9=10.57
b) at 0.05 level and 2,12 degree of freedom crtical value =3.885
as test stat F is greater then critical value we reject null hypothesis and conclude that there is significant difference between the groups
