1) Do books cost more on average at the local bookstore or through Amazon.com?

For this question we are not comparing between 2 populations(we are not asking whether people prefer bookstores to Amazon), rather you are asking a group of people who have bought books from the local book store and through amazon, and what they feel about one variable, the pricing. Here we find the proportion of people who feel that whether books cost more or less. Hence here we will take independent samples.

2) Do freshmen students use the library to study more often than senior students?

Here the question is specific. Here based on actuals, we sample freshmen and find how many use the library, and we sample senior students and ask how many use the library to study. Based on these 2 proportions we will draw a conclusion. Hence here we will take paired samples.
