A study of undergraduate computer science students examined changes in major after the first year. The study examined the fates of 256 students who enrolled as first-year students in the same fall semester. The students were classified according to gender and their declared major at the beginning of the second year. The students studied were enrolled at a large Midwestern university several years ago. Discuss how you would conduct a similar study at a college or university of your choice today. Include a description of all variables that you would collect for your study.Explanation / Answer
With a random sampling method, we can examine an interest data variables according to population size through student's opinion survey and the personal records from analyzed subjects . The variables that we could use will depends on the investigation objective. Some interesting variables are gender, age, specialization, precedence school, wanted labor field, degree, enrolled date and estimate egress date.
Gender: gives information about how many man and women study the specific career.
Age: shows how old are the sample elements.
Specialization: indicates which specializations areas are the most and less current by students
Precedence school: tells some about the origin of the students in meaning of their last school
Wanted labor field: contemplates information about student’s personals interests in jobs
Degree: indicates the actual status of the students
Enrolled date and estimate egress date: both information establishes the start of the student’s career and a possible egress date.
Considering those variables, our investigation project will have a reliable information about student´s preferences.
