Question

The table below shows the soft drink preferences of people in three age groups. a. If one of the subjects is randomly selected, find the probability that the person is over40. b. If one of the subjects is randomly selected, find the probability that the person is over 40 given that he or she drinks cola. c. If one of the subjects is randomly selected, find the probability that the person does NOT drink lemon-lime. d. Suppose that two subjects are randomly selected. Find the probability that they both prefer root beer (assume that these events are independent).

Explanation / Answer

Solution:

Total People = 40 + 25 +20 + 35 + 20 + 30 + 20 + 30 +35 = 255

Total no. of people above 40 years= 85

So probability of one subject randomly and person is over 40 = (85/255) = 0.3333

Solution 2:

Probability of randomly selected with person over 40 years and is drink cola = 20/255 = 0.0784

Solution 3:

Probability that the person dring Lemon Lime = 85/255 = 0.333

Probability that the person does not drink lemonlime = 1-0.3333 = 0.66666

Solution 4:

Probability that subjects prefer root beer = 75/255 = 0.294118
