Question

2. (20 pts) Analyze the following vaccine capacity problem. The packaged volume of single dose vaccines is given in the table below. At a given location, you need to have 11000 doses of each vaccine type. The location you are analyzing uses refrigerators with storage compartment dimensions of 24 inches by 20 inches by 18 inches. Assuming all vaccines are only stored in the refrigerator, how many refrigerators do you need? Fully justify your answer. Vaccine Name Packaged volume in cm3 DTP DTP-HepB-Hib Measles Oral Polio Tetanus Toxoid Tuberculosis Yellow Fever 9.7 3.5 1.2 2.5

Explanation / Answer

It is to be noted that 1 inch = 2.54 cm

Therefore ,

Capacity of refrigerator = ( 24 x 2.54) x ( 20 x 2.54 ) x ( 18 x 2.54 ) cubic CM = 141584.23 cubic CM

Cumulative volume of all vaccines 1 unit each

= 3 + 9.7 + 3.5 + 1 + 3 + 1.2 + 2.5 cubic cm

= 23.9 cubic cm

Therefore, cumulative volume of 11000 doses of each vaccine type = 23.9 x 11000 = 262900 cubic cm

Therefore , number of refrigerators required

=Cumulative volume of 11000 doses of each vaccine type / Capacity of refrigerator

= 262900/ 141584.23

= 1.856 ( 2 rounded to next higher whole number )

NUMBER OF REFRIGERATORS NEEDED = 2

NUMBER OF REFRIGERATORS NEEDED = 2
