Question

Prior to conducting a study, a researcher decides that the significance of the findings will be interpreted using a probability value of .05. Evaluate what this significance value indicates. How would the interpretation of findings change if a probability value of .01 were used? Prior to conducting a study, a researcher decides that the significance of the findings will be interpreted using a probability value of .05. Evaluate what this significance value indicates. How would the interpretation of findings change if a probability value of .01 were used?

Explanation / Answer

Singnificance level of 0.05 indicates that the result of the research is true with 95% confidence and it is not true with a probability of 5% .

Confidence level(CL) = 1 - Significance level.

Thus, CL = 1 - 0.05 = 0.95 = 95%

In a research, if we find that the confidence interval for the mean is [10, 20], where we used 0.05 significance/probability level, then we interpret as " We are 95% confident that the required mean lies between 10 and 20 inclusive". This means we are not sure with a probabiity of 5% that the mean lies between those values. It means there is 5% chance/probability that the mean does not lie between 10 and 20, inclusive, that is, it is either less than 10 or greater than 20.

And if we take the significance level as 0.01, the interprtation will remain same except that we use 1% instead of 5% and 99% instead of 95%. The result is true with 99% confidence and not true with 1% probability. We are 99% confident that the mean lies between 10 and 20, inclusive, that is, the mean is any value between those values. But there is 1% chance that the mean would be less than 10 or greater than 20.

(since, CL = 1 - significance level(probability value) = 1 - 0.01 = 0.99 = 99%)
