Two Experimental Design Questions
A cheese manufacturer wants to test two additives for their effect on texture of cheese. There are three treatments: additive A, additive B and no additive. A different batch of milk is delivered to the factory each morning. Only three cheese-making runs are possible each day. The experiment can run for one week - from Monday to Friday. Texture is assessed as a number on a continuous scale by some very advanced testing equipment.
Q1. Design the experiment and name the experimental design you have chosen. (randomized complete block design, completely randomized design, Latin square design, or incomplete block design?)
Q2. Each run requires one employee to supervise it. The manufacturer can call on any of three different employees at any one time but no one employee is available all week. Explain how would you allocate them to supervise runs?
Explanation / Answer
As, only three runs are possible in each day... and the employees are also not available in all week.
Q1) we have to choose the Incomplete block design.... where, treatments are additive A, additive B and no additive. The blocks will be each day... ie. Number of blocks are 5 and number of treatments are 3.
Q2) If 'x' number of employees available in that week (x=1,2,3) then block size, k = 3 (if x=3) then number of replicate , r=5 .... and lambda=5.
