Question
Scenario: You have recently been hired to teach at a New York City public school. Prior to your first day of school, you receive some background on your new class. Reviewing the information, you see that roughly 30% of your expected students are currently performing below grade level A. What steps will you take during the first few days/weeks of school to orient yourself to the needs and context of your students and to familiarize yourself to the school community (e.g. co-workers, administration/principal, parents, etc.)? B. Describe your end of academic year goals for your students. What do you hope they will be able to achieve? How will you know if you are successful? How might you adjust your goals and strategies to meet the needs of learners below grade level or learners with other special academic needs? C. What specific strategies or next steps would you pursue ifyour instructional efforts are not yielding your expected results by the first- half of the school year?Explanation / Answer
A. As a teacher the very thing that I will be doing is getting used to all the students in the class by communicating with them effectively so that a relationship is established and we get to know each other better. I will behave like friends with them so that they can share the issues they experience as students and what is that they actually want to do. I will meet the parents of some students who are experiencing issues and will talk it out with them regarding the issues they're son or daughter experience. I believe that in order to be a successful and effective teacher it is very important that the teacher understands the students and empathize their situation which will make the students feel that the teacher supports them whenever required. I will be planning to talk to other senior tecahers who are teaching it her subjects in the class and will try to understand the students from their perspective as well as initially I need to gather as much information possible that will assist me in future.
B. The academic goal that I will set is simple and that is all the students have to perform better than what they are achieving till date, and better dies not imply better marks or better percentage it means that the students have to learn to their interest and not for getting better marks because at this level education is imparted in order to help the students grow as human beings, marks are important but more important is to learn and understand that learning is required for their betterment and not for compulsion. I believe that they will be able to achieve because I will treat each and every student as equal and students who are experiencing issues because they feel they aare lagging behind will be given more care so that they can actually be good and even better than students who were already doing good. I will know that I am successful when I observe that students discuss what they learn with their friends in class or with me and even having doubts regarding a particular topic. This will ensure that they are stidying and learning what have been assigned to them not only for marks but because they have started liking education.
C. It may happen that students fail to understand and the expectations which I had as a teacher are not fulfilled then I actually may have to modify the strategy and also monitor the students closely and understand the aspects where I may be doing things wrong because it is my responsibility to make the process interesting so that it Kindle interest in the students mind. After the first half ends I will assessing and evaluating students and if I observe that the growth of students have actually stunted then through proper evaluation and monitoring it should be made better for the students to grasp and perform.
