In your definition, you want to talk briefly about the purpose of OSHA efforts. Conduct a bit of research and summarize possible strategies to reduce OSHA violations in a particular industry or even in your organization. Can you share at least two strategies?

Explanation / Answer

1. According to Bloomberg, Union Membership in the USA has reduced to 10.7% of its workforce. It was 20% in 1983 and it has reduced to half. The government organizations have around 35% and private sector has 6.5% of its employees in unions. South Carolina has the lowest unionization rate and New York has the highest rate. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2018, men are more than women in the unions. the number of Blacks is more than White, Asian or Hispanic workers. Workers belonging to education, training, library, protective service occupations have maximum rates of unionization. The majority of the people belonged to the age group of 45 to 64 years.

According to Forbes, 2016, labor unions are facing long transformations in this modern era. Days will be approaching when there won't be any unions rule. Already in private sectors, unions have dwindled.

In Newsweek, the unions are required by the middle-class people who need security by safeguarding their interests.

Some experts say, the involvement of people in technological innovation and expanding their knowledge and proactive communication campaigns can lead to awareness among trade union workers and can help in transformation. Again, some have views that unions are unnecessary as they create problems for the organizations.

2. OSHA stands for The Organizational Safety and Health Administration. According to OSHA Act, 1971, It is a federal agency that is responsible and accountable for protecting worker's health and safety thereby safeguarding their rights and working towards the development of welfare of workers. It is under the department of labor. Its objectives are safe and healthy working conditions by enforcing some standards and providing training, education, and assistance to workers. it includes mostly private sector employers and workers and few from the public sectors. State or local government organizations, self-employed workers, farmers are not included in OSHA.

According to OSHA rules and regulations, employers should follow certain instructions like providing awareness to employees regarding hazards, providing training to deal with various hazards, tracking work-related diseases, sample tests of air, water inside the factory, providing protection equipment, conducting medical tests, nondiscrimination among employees etc.

Strategies to reduce OSHA violations:

1. OSHA has set certain PELs (permissible exposure limits) to protect from the polluted air which causes air-borne and chronic diseases. Regular checks and penalties in case of non-compliance would help. Surprise visits would provide accurate data.

2. Creating awareness among workers regarding various standards like emergency exit routes, emergency drills, fire protection, general working conditions, tracking health and diseases etc. Also from the number of complaints from workers will give an idea about mishaps and actual enforcement of OSHA standards.
