Explanation / Answer
Answer
Here by the problem the mean and standard deviation of the first score is 65 points and 15 points respectively.
On the other hand the mean and standard deviation of the second score is 85 points and 10 points respectively.
Now we will compare the score of Derrick with Julie by their z-score as we know z-score is a stadardized unit free score which is obtained by dividing the difference of value and mean by the standard deviation
SO if Derrick score 85 in each test then his z-score for first test be, (85-65)/15=1.3333 and the z-score for the second test be (85-85)/10=0
So he scored a total of 1.3333+0=1.3333 in respect to z-score in both score
Similarly as Julie scored 70 in first test and 100 in second test hence the total z-score of Julie be,
=(70-65)/15+(100-85)/10 =0.3333+1.5
=1.8333
Hence we choose option B as the correct one where it says,
B.Julie's claim is correct. Derrick's z-scores are 1.3333 for the first test and 0 for the second test. Julies z-score are 0.3333 fir the first test and 1.5 for the second test. Derrick's total score is 1.3333 which is less than Julie's total 1.8333.
Hence the answer............
