Question
The next 6 questions pertain to the following information: In an orientation meeting for new students, The College President wants to emphasize the importance of getting good grades in order to get a good paying job after graduation. To support this point, the College President collects some data from recent graduates and analyzes their college GPA and Starting Salary (in thousands of dollars) from their first job. The results are provided in the scatter plot above. Which of the following statements are true? GPA and Salary are both response variables. GPA and Salary are both predictor variables. GPA is the response variable and Salary is the explanatory variable. GPA is the predictor variable and Salary is the response variable.Explanation / Answer
D) GPA is the predictor variable and Salary is the response variable
Since we know that, in an experiment variables those that are measured or observed are called response variable while other variables in the experiment that affect the response and can be set or measured by the experimenter are called predictor variables.
In this experiment the college President varied GPA to show its effect on the starting salary of their first job. Hence GPA is the predictor variable which was set by experimentor while we observed its effect on starting salary which in turn acts as a response variable.
