Question

From the perspective of a person in the street, statisticians do not always get it right. Sometimes it seems that they get it spectacularly wrong. Modern society applies statistics to phenomena as diverse as disease prediction and politics, from actuarial tables in insurance to weather forecasting; we have integrated “big data” and “number-crunching” into many critical functions of our culture and society.

Do you think the use of statistics is more of a positive or negative influence on society as a whole? Why do you take this position?

Explanation / Answer

The use of Statistics has had a positive influence on society as whole.

Had it not been statistics, we would have never been able to reduce the rates of various diseases, death rate , unemployment rate, illiteracy rate and so on. Only because we collected the data at the first point , and then analyzed it , that we were able to frame the right policies and help improve the overall level of the society.

Statistics defiinitely doesnot help us define the future completey , but yes it helps us anlayse the past and predict the upcoming events with some certainity and it helps us be prepared for it.

Had it not been statistics of past Natural crisis in Japan , their frequency, and so on , how would they be prepared for the upcoming natural disaster ... ??

Statistics has had a very positive impact on the society . We are more informed in many terms due to the numbers and it gives us a better idea of how to handle the upcoming situations, it helps us think about the ways to reduce the problems that exist in society and work towards the betterment of the overall society.
