Question
The second segment of a composite tolerance specification is not required to include datum feature references. The pattern-locating and feature-relating tolerance zones may overlap, provided the feature meets all tolerance zone requirements. Hole location variations cannot be plotted on grid paper with sufficient accuracy to determine if composite tolerance requirements are met. Pins in a functional gage for checking hole locations are made equal in size to the MMC size of holes if the holes include a position tolerance of 001" diameter or more. Hole size alone is not a good indicator of which holes form a complete pattern. Two groups of holes may be checked with one gage if the holes act as a single pattern. Coaxiality of features, such as the cylinders on a step shaft, may be controlled with a position tolerance. Symmetry is when a feature or group of features are dimensioned with a nominal offset to one side of a centerline or center plane. Concentricity can be perfect when the feature surfaces include large total runout (surface) variations. Implied datums are permitted on position tolerances. The datum simulator for a secondary datum reference at RMB must force the workpiece into alignment with the simulator, even if this pulls the workpiece off the primary datum simulator.Explanation / Answer
