A researcher reports an F-ratio with df= 2,24 for an independent-measures research study.
a. How many treatment conditions were compared in the study?  Be sure to show all formulas with symbols (and plug in numbers), steps, processes and calculations for all parts of the answers.
b. How many subjects participated in the entire study?  Be sure to show all formulas with symbols (and plug in numbers), steps, processes and calculations for all parts of the answers.

Explanation / Answer

Answer to part a)

The F value is found on the basis of two degrees of freedom. They are as follows:

df1 = df between = (number of groups - 1)

we got df1 = 2

This means number of groups -1 = 2

number of groups = 3

This implies number of treatments = 3

.

Answer to part b)

df2 = df within = Total sample size - number of groups

We got df 2 = 24

This implies:

Total sample size - 3 = 24

Total sample size = 3+24 = 27

Thus total 27 subjects participated
