Question

Have the answer, but explain how to formulate this problem on excel, if it a problem for excel or can it be formulated on word document? How do you write this problem out step by step, with clear understanding on what numbers to figure etc.

Consider a capital budgeting problem with six project represented by binary (0 or 1) variables X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6.

1.      Write a constraint modeling the situation in which at least 2 of the project from 1, 2, 4, and 6 must be selected.

2.      Write a constraint modeling the situation in which only 2 of the projects from 1, 2, 3, and 4 must be selected.

3.      Write a constraint modeling the situation project 2 or 6 must be selected, but not both.

4.      Write a constraint modeling the situation in which at most 4 projects from the 6 can be selected.

Answer:

A. Write a constraint modeling the situation in which at least 2 of the project from 1, 2, 4, and 6 must be selected.

                        X1+X2+X4+X6 >=2

B. Write a constraint modeling the situation in which only 2 of the projects from 1, 2, 3, and 4 must be selected.

                        X1+X2+X3=2

C. Write a constraint modeling the situation project 2 or 6 must be selected, but not both.

                        X2+X6=1

D. Write a constraint modeling the situation in which at most 4 projects from the 6 can be selected.

                        X6<=4

Explanation / Answer

The answer is below:

A. Write a constraint modeling the situation in which at least 2 of the project from 1, 2, 4, and 6 must be selected.

                        X1+X2+X4+X6 >=2

First we have to set 1,2,4 and 6 as a variable of X, then we have X1, X2, X4 and X6. The answer for the problem must to be equal or more than two, because we need to choose two elements.

B. Write a constraint modeling the situation in which only 2 of the projects from 1, 2, 3, and 4 must be selected.

                        X1+X2+X3=2

For this situation, from a group of X1, X2, X3 we have to select only two elements from a 3 sample size,

C. Write a constraint modeling the situation project 2 or 6 must be selected, but not both.

                        X2+X6=1

Here we need to stablish a choice between two elements, that’s why the result will be just one element

D. Write a constraint modeling the situation in which at most 4 projects from the 6 can be selected.

                        X6<=4

We need to select from a six size sample at most four elements, that’s why must be equal or less than four elements.
