Explanation / Answer

Combining the data for tall and short students and arranging them in descending order as below. The ranks are assigned first without ties as below:

For tied values, let us group all the tied observations and assign the average rank to all tied values in that group. For example, the score of 20 has 4 repetitions with rank assigned as 1, 2, 3, 4. The average of these ranks is (1+2+3+4)/4 = 2.5. So, for all the tied values of 20, we will assign them a rank of 2.5.

Following the above procedure for all tied values, we get the table as below:

Average Rank is the new rank assigned to the individuals.

Wilt has a score of 16. Looking in the above table, for a score of 16, the average rank is 12. Hence, rank of Wilt's score = 12
