STAT
In each of the following situations, identify a problem with the sampling approach and how that problem might influence the results of the sample. It may help to identify the sampling scheme, but there are multiple correct answers. A proper (brief) justification of your answer is required for full credit. 1.a) A student working for the UWDaily wants to know how students feel overall about a potential new fee increase. To get a wide array of opinions, they ask the honors program to provide a list of five students from each department that they can contact for comment. 1.b) An intern at the CDC is trying to promote a hand washing campaign on college campuses, and they want to collect some facts and figures to back the campaign up. They visit a local college campus and ask students as they exit the restroom if they washed their hands when they were done. 1.c) Concerned about the growing popularity of a new farmer's market, a local grocer put a poll up on their website asking whether respondents preferred the convenience of a store to a once a week farmer's market. 1.d) The FCC asked for comments from US citizens to gauge opinion on a new proposal to remove net neutrality protections. 1.e) For each of the previous problems (1.a - 1.d), identify the sample and the target population.Explanation / Answer
a) the problem is with the honors program. as we are selecting students only from the honors program hence we are introducing a bias by only asking the questions to the honor program students , rest of the students from the academin programs are left out. hence this is not a true representation of the population
b)
here the keyword is local. as the idea is to promote the campaign across all the colleges , we cannot conclude results by taking a survey of students belonging to the local colleges only. We must take sample from different colleges who are in different relevant geographioes where the campaigns are run
c)
again in this case , the grocer is local while the website would bring in results from all over the country. hence the opinions are not the true representation of the local population . The question is to ask the preference from the local population and not from the population from the whole country
d)
we must make sure that the net neutrality opinion is given by people who are actually netizens and not just citizens who are not going to use the internet anyways. so we need to make sure that the respondents are the true netizens ,
