Question

For each effect below ( Please only answer if you can complete each one) Thank you !!

For each effect (2 main effects and the interaction) you must do two things:

State whether the effect is significant: yes or no

Describe the nature of the effect (see my example on the previous page)Please see the example for reference.

Example:

Question:

Show T An error has occurred Reality TVShow 50 10 Daily Show Hours 1 Hour 50 Watching 5 Hours 90 100 90 80 70 60 50 40 30 20 10 1 Hour - 5 Hours Daily Shovw Reality TV Show Example 2 Excel Chart By looking at the marginal means for the number of hours watched, I see that both equal 50. Thus Main effect for # hours: not significant, on average social awareness is not influenced by how much TV someone watches The marginal means for the show type are 70 and 30. Thus Main effect for Type of TV: significant; Daily Show results in more socially awareness than Reality TV If we look at the graph we can see that the lines are not parallel (they in fact cross) Interaction: significant; the effect of the number of hours spent watching TV on social awareness depends on the type of TV programs watched; at 1 hr. there was Thus: no difference, at 5 hrs. there is a difference with Daily Show resulting in higher social awareness scores than Reality TV.

Explanation / Answer

an examiner examined the effects of a familiarity and display clarity on the ability to recognize words.

Participants viewed 100 words.
First 25 words were familiar and were presented in focus.
Second 25 were unfamiliar and presented in focus. Third 25 were familiar and out of focus.
Final 25 were unfamiliar and out of focus.
Dependent variable is reaction time in ms.

Clear familiar 500
Clear unfamiliar 600

Fuzzy Familiar 620
Fuzzy unfamiliar 950

Cosidering data provided in question, we calculate the marginal means :

Clear (mean for familiar and unfamiliar words) = (500+600)/2 = 550
Fuzzy (mean for familiar and unfamiliar words) = (620+950)/2 = 785

Thus main effect of display clarity on recognizing ability = less significant, clarity average is less affected by recognizing ability as mean variance stands at 50
Again
main effect of familiarity on recognizing ability = more significant, clarity average is more affected by familiarity as mean variance stands at 165.

Looking at the graph we can say that lines are not parallel

Interaction: NIL

Effect of familiarity and display clarity are not at all interacting with each other and hence we don't find any relation between the familiarity and display clarity on the ability to
recognize words.
