Question

A researcher was interested in whether children raised in a communal environment differed from children in the general population in their ability to recognise emotional expression. The test for emotional expression involved showing a series of pictures of various facial expressions. In this series, an average child can identify 10 expressions with a standard deviation of 3 expressions. The child was able to identify 16 expressions correctly. (a) Propose suitable null and alternative hypotheses. (b) What is a suitable comparison distribution? (c) Determine the critical score on the comparison distribution at which the null hypothesis should be rejected to give a significance level of 0.05. (d) Compare the subject's score with this critical score. (e) Decide whether to reject the null hypothesis and state your conclusion.

Explanation / Answer

Null Hypothesis: H0: Children raised in communal environment are same as the children in the general population in terms of their ability to recognize emotional expression.

Alterative Hypothesis : Ha : Children raised in communal environment are different from the children in the general population in terms of their ability to recognize emotional expression.

Mean number of expression for population = 10

Standard deviation of expression for population = 3

(B) The suitable comparison is the Z - test comparison as population standard deviation is given.

(C) Critical score =   + Z95% = 10 + 1.96 * 3 = 15.88

so expression greater than 15.88, null hypothesis shall be rejected at the confidence level of 0.05.

(D) Subuject score of 16 is greater than the critical score 15.88.

(E) We shall reject the null hypothesis and can conclude that the child living in communal environment different from the general enviroment.
