A bus driver drives to Erie at 65 mph and returns driving 55 mph. Find the average speed per hour for the entire trip. A carpenter buys $50 dollars worth of nails at $5 per pound and $50 worth of nails at $2 per pound. Find the average cost per pound. The growth rates of the Living Life Insurance Corporation for the past three years were 35%, 24% and 18%. Find the average annual growth rate. A stock price increased each year for five years at the following percentages: 10%, 8%, 12%, 9%, and 3%. Find the average annual increase.

Explanation / Answer

7. Note: You can't take the average of two speeds to find the average speed for the same distance. You can do it only for the same time.

The formula for average speed over same distance is 2uv / (u + v)

= 2 * 65 * 55 / (65 + 55)

= 59.5833 mph.

8. As with the earlier problem, the formula is 2uv / (u + v)

= 2 * 5 * 2 / (5 + 2)

= $2.86 per pound.

9. Average annual growth rate does not take into matter the compounding.

Average = (35 + 24 + 18) / 3 = 77 / 3 = 25.66%

10. As with the earlier case, average increase = (10 + 8 + 12 + 9 + 3) / 5

= 42 / 5 = 8.4%.
