Question
Consider a family with a mother, father, and two children. Let A1 = {mother has influenza}, A2 = {father has influenza}, A3 = {first child has influenza}, A4 = {second child has influenza}, B = {at least one child has influenza}, C = {at least one parent has influenza}, and D = {at least one person in the family has influenza}.
I am having trouble with the following question:
Express C in terms of A1, A2, A3, and A4.
My attempt at the answer: C= (A1 U A2) n ( A3’ n A4’) where '=compliment. To me this expressions says "The mom, or the dad have influenza and the first child does not have influenza and at least one child does not have influenza" which I think is along the right lines but I'm not entirely sure.
Explanation / Answer
Here
C=either the mother or father or both has influenza = A1 + A2 - A1 A2 = A1 U A2
I dont think to express C in terms of A1,A2,A3 and A4, we will ever need A3 and A4. Because A3 and A4 is about child not about parents.
For Calculating D, we will use all of Ai
P(D) = 1 - P(nobody has influenza) = 1 - (1 - A1) (1-A2) (1-A3) (1-A4)
