Question

Effective management is key to an organization's success. But strong leadership is important too. Many people debate the use of these words interchangeably. Are all managers leaders? Are all leaders managers? What do you think? Discuss your opinion and include good and bad examples of leadership and/or management. How does this relate to what you have read in this unit? Don't forget that management/leadership exists in sports (Tigers/Leland), business (Ford/Allan Mulally), and politics (Nelson Mandela). Leland turned the Tigers around when he came to Detroit by focusing on the people. Allan Mulally steered Ford in the right direction by being honest and creating an environment for mistakes. As a leader who had to rebuild South Africa, Nelson Mandela focused on small details that inspired the people so he could lead the country into the future.

Explanation / Answer

Management is the process of designing and maintaining an environment in which individuals, working together in groups and complete efficiently selected aims towards realizing organizations roles and responsibilities. Managers are charged with the responsibility of taking actions that will make it possible for individuals to make their best offerings to group objectives.

Every manager performs the below mentioned four functions that are critical to the success of assignment:

A leader is the individual which can make itself visible at all levels of an organization and in all roles and associated functions.

Leadership can be defined as the process of social influence in which one person can join the help and support of others in performing a successful task.

More precisely we can say that a leader is a person under whose influence a group of people work towards a specific result.

Thus, it is also said that all Managers are good leaders but all leaders are not good managers.
