Question

There are 18 injection molding machines on the floor of a small company. The shop produces batches of molded parts requiring a setup time of 2.8 hours for each production batch. Average standard time for each part in a batch is 35 seconds, and there are an average of 400 parts in a batch. The plant workforce consists of three workers per molding machine, one foreman, plus two clerical support staff. (a) Determine how many molded parts can be produced in 1 month, if there are 8 hours worked per day and an average of 22 days per month at one shift per day. (b) What is the labor productivity ratio of the molding floor, expressed as parts per worker-hour?

Explanation / Answer

NUmber of molding machines = 18

The total time taken in production of one batch = Setup time + batch processing time

= 2.8 hours + 35/60 * 1/60 * 400 hours = 6.69 hours

(a) Number of modeled parts = 8 hours per day * 22 days per month * (1/6.69 hours) * 18 machines * 400 = 189417 molded parts per hour

(b) There are in total 6 workers which includes 3 workers per molding machine, one foremean, plus two clerical support staff.

labour productivity ratio of molding floor = Total output produced/ labor input use

= 189417 molded parts per month/ (22 days per month * 8 hours permen * 6 man)

= 179.37 molded parts / man - hour
