Explanation / Answer
Agriculture which contributes to 70% of water withdrawals around the world is majorly responsible for water pollution. Discharge from farms in the form of larger quantities of agrochemicals, organic matter, sediments and other water drainage causes water pollution. According to a report published by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), high growth has been seen in the crop production such as pesticides and chemical fertilizers which is heavily disturbing the water quality. In high income and developed countries agriculture pollution is the main contributor to water pollution rather than the industrial pollution. Nitrate which is released from agriculture is today the world’s most common chemical contaminant for groundwater. It negatively effects the aquatic ecosystem and several fishers and aquatic animal is dying because of this chemical. Also, in the last few years a new class of agriculture pollutants have emerged like vaccines, antibiotics, and growth promoter. They have been increasingly used by farmers as well as in Poultry farming to make the animals and vegetables grow fast. These when discharged effect the water ecosystem. In European Union, more than 38% of water bodies are facing threat from water pollution. In case of US also, agriculture is the main source of water pollution followed by wetlands. According to OECD, millions of dollars spend every year on water pollution caused through agriculture.
City sewage water is another major threat to water pollution. Water released from cities sewage and industrial waste waters are showing deadly signs since last two decades because of increasing Industrialisation. Such wasters are drained into rivers without any treatment which leads to several diseases. It results in polluted drinking water as well as water which is used in irrigation. It has observed in case of Developing countries that no proper attention is been given to sewage treatment plants and therefore such contaminated water easily mix with fresh and clean in rivers and disturb the living. In developed nations proper care of waste water is taken through high quality and maintained sewage water treatment plants which reduces the water pollution chances. In low income countries, no proper sewage is available to Human beings. No proper toilet facility and poor people are left with the only option to pee in open. This is one of the main groundwater polluter which do not only increasing water pollution but at the same time disturbing the environment.
Industry is huge contributor tow aster pollution through discharge of waste waters into the rivers, lakes, etc. Such rivers water flow into cities and cause serious diseases like Diarrhoea, Cholera, etc. Many serious chemicals discharge for the industries like –Lead, Mercury, Phosphates and Nitrates, Sulphur, Oils which doesn’t dissolve in water, etc. kills the water. Oil pollution like dumping of oil on ocean surfaces by shipping companies on routine basis is a severe damage to marine life such as birds, fishes, and other aquatic animals. It never dissolves with water and remains on water surface and got stuck into their feathers and don’t let them swing or fly and ultimately they die. Same way mercury and Lead is disturbing both Humans and animals because it is a non-biodegradable waste.
