Question

A ray of light normal to the short face of a 37-53-90 prism is shown. A drop of liquid is placed on the hypotenuse of the prism. The index of refraction of the prism is 1.52. If the beam is internally reflected, what is the index of the liquid? 1.90 1.09 1.21 2.53 the correct index is not shown as a choice Referencing the following image, the angle labeled q_3 is the critical angle of the medium whose index of refraction is 1.25. How will the reflected ray shown above behave when it strikes the upcoming vertical interface? The fisherman shown in the picture above will see the fish: a) closer to the boat then it actually is b) further from the boat then it actually is c) closer to the surface then it actually is d) further below the surface then it actually is Which combination is correct? a only b only c only d only a and c b and c b and d

Explanation / Answer

1) angle of incidence i = 90-37 =53 degree

For Total internal reflection,

1.52 sin 53 degree = n *1

n =1.21 third option

2) n sin theta =1

theta = arcsin (1/1.25) = 53 degree

For vertical surface, angle of incidence =37 degree

sin r = 1.25 sin 37 degree = 0.75

r = arcsin 0.75 = 48.6 degree

It will escape the medium at angle of 90-48.6= 41.4 with vertical.

3) option c only. It will be closer to surface at same distance from boat.
