Question

(a) If you were asked to choose a material to transfer the load from the bicycle type "engine" on a human powered helicopter to the rotors, which of the materials above would you choose? (i) Material: (ii) List 2 properties that support your choice and state why each property supports your choice in one bullet. (b) If you wanted to make microwave safe food containers, what material would you choose? (i) Material: (ii) List 2 properties that support your choice and state why each property supports your choice in one bullet.

Explanation / Answer

(a) The material will be appropriate for helicopters to the rotors if it has low density and high strength. So, high E carbon fiber epoxy matrix composite will be the most appropriate choice.

(ii) This material has high eleastic and tensile strength, 200 GPa and 760 MPa respectively. Also, it has a low density of 1.7 g/cm^3 making it quite light.

(b) The material that should be used for Microwave containers should be hard enough with a high resistivity towards heat and temperature. So, the best material out of the list will be SiC or silicon carbide.

(ii) This material has a high hardness of 3000K and have a temperature resistance upto 2800 degree celcius. Also, the density of the material is 3.3 g/cm^3, that means it is a light material.
