Question
The bulbs in the circuit shown are identical. Treat the battery as ideal in answering all the questions. a. Rank bulbs 1-6 according to brightness, from brightest to dimmest. Explain your reasoning. b. Rank the voltages across the bulbs in order from greatest to smallest. Explain your reasoning. c. Write an equation that relates the voltage across bulbs 3.5. and 610 the battery voltage. d. Bulb I is removed from its socket. i. Does the brightness of bulb 2 increase decrease or remain the same? Explain. ii. does the brightness of bulb 6 Increase, decrease, or remain the same? Explain. iii. Does the brightness of bulb 3 increase decrease or remain the same? > ExplainExplanation / Answer
a) 6 will get all the battery current and hence the largest drop across it. The drop across 4 = drop across 5 = (Vbattery - V6). The drop across 3 and combi of 1 and 2 will be equal. Drop across 1 and 2 = V3/2.
More the drop, more the wattage, P = V^2/R
So the brightness order will be:
6 > 4 = 5 > 3 > 1 = 2.
b)6 will get all the battery current and hence the largest drop across it. The drop across 4 = drop across 5 = (Vbattery - V6). The drop across 3 and combi of 1 and 2 will be equal. Drop across 1 and 2 = V3/2.
More the drop, more the wattage, P = V^2/R
So the voltage drop order will be:
6 > 4 = 5 > 3 > 1 = 2.
c)V3 = Vbattery - (V5 + V6)
d)(i)Decreases. Bulb 2 will not glow at all, since the loop does not completes for the current flow.
ii)The total resistance of the circuit will decrease. So the current will increase, this will result in the greater drop across 6 compared to former situation. Hence brightness of 6th will increase.
iii)V3 = Vbattery - (V5 + V6)
The voltage drop across 3 will be lesser than the former situations and hence its brightness will decrease.
