Question

the first photogate the cart initially passes (on the left), and GateState2 refers to the second (on the right). A "1" indicates when the beam is broken, in other words the peg first blocks the bean. “0" indicates when the beam is detected again (i.e. when the peg on the cart no longer blocks the beam). The sample data shows a cart that passes through the first and second photogates, bounces off the wall at the end of the track, and passes back through both photogates. Sample Data: You will measure the distance between the photogates during the lab. You will then use the time data to calculate the cart's velocity for the collision studies. To get accurate data, use the time recorded for when the photogates' beams are broken by the peg attached to the top of the cart (ie. use the highlighted times) GateState1 GateState2time (s 1.200125 1.211099 11.343536 0 1.353895 1.491249 01.502508 1.633995 1.644761 0 t 0 Updated: 10/16/16 uC MERCED Physics 8/18 Collisions I: Prelalb For questions 1- 3, refer to the figure above with positions A- E indicated. Referring to the figure above with positions A-E indicated. At t = 0.00s, a cart is launched from the far left. What is the position (A times. 1. E) and the direction (left, right) of the cart at the following Direction Left or Ri Time Position A-E 1.00 s 1.25 s 1.60 s

Explanation / Answer

Time (1.0)   - Direction - Right , cart is still on left, left of gate1, moving to the right.

Time (1.25) - Direction - Right , passed the left gate and moving to the right

Time (1.6) - Direction - left, cart bounce the wall and crossed the gate to second time and moving to the left

There is no figure and A -E are not shown.

2. time taken from gate 1 to gate2 = 1.343536 - 1.200125 = 0.143411 s

cart velocity = 8/0.143411 = 55.78 cm/s

3. As the cart bounces back it passes gate2 at 1.491249s

                                                passes gate1   at 1.633995s

time diff = 0.542746s ;

vel = 8/0.542746 = 14.74 cm/s

4. They are not same beacuse , after collsion the cart will loose some energy and the velocity is less.

The hightlight inidicate when exactly the cart is passing the gate.
