Question

Two tanks of water are in a cascade arrangement where water which drains out of the first tank goes directly into the second. The first tank starts out with fresh water and salt water, containing a 1/4 salt per gallon, flows into the first tank at a rate of 5 gallons per minute. water flows out of the first tank into the second tank and out of the second tank all at the same rate of 5 gallons/min, so the volumes of the two tanks remain constant. The first tank holds 100 gallons and the second holds 200 gallons. Both tanks are full. The second tank starts out with 50 lb of salt. Find functions for the amount of salt in each tank as a function of time. (We are assuming that the salt is always uniformly mixed into the water in each tank.

Explanation / Answer

for the tank 1 function of salt water will be S1(t) = 25-(5/4)*t

for the tank 2 function of salt water will be S2(t) = 50+(5/4)*t
