Question

You enroll in a course where the final grade is determined by the mean score after 10 tests. On each test you can get a score between 0 and 10. If you don't show up for a test, you automatically get a 0. The passing grade for the course is 6. a) If at the beginning of the course you know that you will miss 3 of the tests, what should be your mean on the remaining 7 tests to get a passing grade? b) If your mean is 5 after 4 of the 7 tests you'll manage to take, can you still hope for a passing grade, and what is the highest grade you can get?

Explanation / Answer

a) You need the total score of 60 (10*6 = 60) to enroll for the course

If we missed 3 tests and for the remaining 7 tests, we need mean score of 60/7 or 8.57 (rounded to two decimal places)

B) If mean score is 5 after 4 tests then you need the total score of (60-5*4) = 40 from the remaining 3 tests which is impossible because max you can get is 30( 3*10) and highest grade we can get is 50 (5*4 + 3*10 = 50)
