Question

What are the effects of repeated exposure to an advertising message? The answer may depend both on the length of the ad and how often it is repeated. An experiment investigated this question using undergraduate students as subjects. All subjects viewed a 40-minute television program that included ads for a digital camera. Some subjects saw a 30-second commercial: others a 90-second commercial. The same commercial was repeated either 1, 3, or 5 times during the program. After viewing, all of the subjects answered questions about their recall of the ad and their attitude toward the camera. This experiment has two factors. What are they? How many treatments are there? List the treatments.

Explanation / Answer

The experiment is based on two factors -

1) Length of the advertisement.

2) Number of times the advertisement is repreated.

The experiment is conducted to study the effect of repeated exposure to an advertising meassage and the advertisement is repeated either 1, 3, or 5 times, thus, there are 3 treatments -

advertisement repeated 1 time

advertisement repeated 3 times
