Question

A math test was administered to a group of elementary and middle school students. Researchers recorded the test scores of each child as well as some other personal information such as gender, grade, age, SES, height, weight, etc. The scatterplot below shows the relationship between height and test score. Use this plot to answer Questions Are test score and height correlated, looking at the scatterplot? Please explain. Correlation means the variables are related in a certain way. But does one of them CAUSE the other? a) In this example, does height cause good test scores? b) What might be a plausible explanation for the relationship between test scores and height?

Explanation / Answer

13) While the relationship is not as clear , the points do tend to increase together

positive r means positive association, and the closer r is to 1, the closer to a straight line the scatterplot is;

r = +1 is perfect positive linear association, in which case all the points lie exactly on a straight line that has positive slope.

the correlation between height and test score is positive but the relation is not as strong but is still suggestive of influence of height on the test score.
