Question

1.a) A reporter wishes to predict the voting patterns of Washington residents for an article on the upcoming elections. To gather the data, they take a random sample of voters who participated in the Democratic or Republican primary this year. Will this sample suffer from bias, and if so: why? 1.b) Propose an unbiased method of sampling Washington voters that the reporter might use. You need not concern yourself with the feasibility of the sampling approach. 1.c) A researcher at the University of Washington wants to assess how well International students are adjusting to life away from home. They are particularly interested in hearing from students who come from smaller countries who have less representation at the university. How might the researcher select who to interview? 1.d) A park ranger is interested in measuring the average age of trees in a portion of forest that is a mixture of large, sprawling, older trees and small, young, narrow trees. A coworker suggests picking trees from a random location on a satellite map. Why will this approach result in a biased sample? 1.e) Researchers interested in studying the relationship between childhood diet and adult onset diabetes studied a cohort of children and classified them as having either a high, medium, or low sugar diet. They found that children with higher sugar diets were more likely to develop diabetes later in life. Is this study an observational or experimental study? Does it suffer from bias, and if so, why?

Explanation / Answer

1a) yes , the sample would suffer from bias as it would have samples only from the current year. Also , doing a random sample may not give equal represntation of the entire population in terms of age , gender etc

1b) as the researcher wants to predict the voting patterns , hence we shpould consider taking the sample from different years , also make sure that there is an equal representation of sample based on

age

gender

location in washington

1c) Select the international students who come from the smaller countries and do not take a random sample of all the univeisty students

1d) as the researcher is picking tree randomly form a mixture of large , sprawling, older, young and naroow trees, hence this would not result in a bias at the tree are randonly distributed in the area without any pattern.
